Matty looked at her, then looked back through the window.
"How do you feel?"
"All right."
"Did they explain what they're doing?"
He nodded.
"You're going to be fine."
"We'll be coming for you tomorrow," Calvin said. "Just one more day."
Matty said nothing, just continued to stare out the window at the playground. He looked lobotomized.
Calvin took Terry's arm as they left the building for their car. "I'm sorry," he said. "But there may not be any connection . . ."
Terry did not respond. It was a bright, warm May morning, but she could barely focus. She was functioning on autopilot, walking to the parking area by mechanical reflexex.
In the car Calvin asked if she wanted to stop someplace for a coffee. She shook her head. She just wanted to go home, to fall into unconsciousness.
She stared blankly out the window as the car pulled past the children's unit. Matty was still sitting by the window, his eyes fixed beyond the playground. She waved and Calvin flapped his hand through the sunroof. Matty did not notice. He seemed fixed on something in the playground.
As they rolled by, Terry noticed a tall, thin man in black sitting on a bench at the far side of the sandpit. She thought that he looked familiar, that she had seen him recently, but at the moment recollection was not worth the effort.
